First Response from the Makers of Ghomoud After Ashraf Zaki’s Intent to Sue

Controversy Erupts Over TikTok Star Mohamed Shaker’s Role in TV Series Ghomoud
A major controversy has erupted in recent hours after Ashraf Zaki, head of the Egyptian Actors’ Union, announced his intention to sue the producers of the TV series Ghomoud for contracting TikTok star Mohamed Shaker without proper union approval. Shaker, who is not a member of the union nor holds a permit to practice acting, was cast in the series, violating union regulations.
Scriptwriter Fathi El-Gendy Addresses the Crisis
In response to the uproar, Fathi El-Gendy, the scriptwriter of Ghomoud, clarified that the production company, led by producer Walid Samy, is working to resolve the issue. In a statement to Sayidaty, El-Gendy said:
“The production company will address this matter and communicate with Ashraf Zaki in the coming days to regularize Shaker’s status. We respect the union and its regulations, and we will not tolerate any violations of its bylaws.”
El-Gendy also revealed that the series is still in its early preparation stages, with only three episodes completed so far. He emphasized that no official announcements about the project were planned until closer to the filming date, which has yet to be determined.
How the Crisis Began
The controversy began when Shaker announced his involvement in the series on his social media accounts, expressing his excitement about his acting debut. El-Gendy explained:
“The production company was surprised by Shaker’s premature announcement. He was thrilled about his first acting role, but his early disclosure before obtaining the necessary permits unintentionally sparked this crisis.”
He assured that the issue would be resolved soon, as the production team is committed to following union regulations.
Ashraf Zaki’s Stance on Social Media Stars
Ashraf Zaki has repeatedly warned against casting social media influencers in artistic projects without union approval. He stressed that the union welcomes new talents but insists on adherence to legal and professional standards.
In a recent statement, Zaki said:
“The union will not tolerate outsiders entering the profession without proper credentials. Art has recently become a profession for those without one, and we must protect its integrity.”
This is not the first such incident; a similar controversy arose in November 2023 during the production of Baton El-Hout, which featured TikTok star Karawan Mashakel.
